Bags, Jabs and Abs
High intensity cardio class executing the basics of boxing on the heavy bags, supplemented with brief cardio, resistance and balance drills, then finishing up with abdominal work incorporating medicine balls for the ultimate ab challenge.
Cardio Class
Trainer assisted time in the “Cardio Room” allows the guest to either have their current regimen analyzed for effectiveness and/or work on methods to jump start a program they can continue at home.
Cardio Blast 1 and Cardio Blast 2
These two formats focus entirely on aerobic and anaerobic conditioning alternating every 3-5 minutes and using a variety of cardiovascular machines and equipment such as the elliptical, Cybex Arc, treadmill, versa-climber and recumbent bicycle.
In Cardio Blast 1 guests work on becoming familiar with recognizing both their aerobic and anaerobic zones and to vary the response by mixing up the machines used, their speed, incline and resistance to trigger a variety of physiological responses. They also have the opportunity to work on gait analysis and perceived exertion identification.
Cardio Blast 2 refines the same skills but follows a virtual tour led by the trainer that incorporates imaginary hills, flats and other terrain challenges with specific instructions on mindfully controlling one’s heart rate.
Cardio Kickboxing
Always one of the guest's all time favorite classes while at Cal-a-Vie, this is an overall body conditioning class that combines basic martial arts principles including punches, kicks, blocks and other conditioning exercises. This non-stop workout emphasizes proper execution of movements to ensure safety, is tailored to all levels of fitness and contributes to the improvement of aerobic capacity, strength and balance.
Dance
Basic dance movements with an emphasis on rhythm and coordination. The style of dance offered varies and may include: Latin; Country Line; Jazz and Zumba, a fusion of high-energy Latin and international music, with unique moves and combinations.
H.E.A.T. (High Endurance Athletic Training)
A high intensity outdoor workout to challenge your speed, agility and coordination. This class includes drills, non-competitive relay and technical movement.
Hikes
The highlight of the week for many guests is the Monday through Saturday hiking trails, in addition to a short Sunday morning trek for those departing. Beginning at daybreak, these hikes include a variety of terrain, multiple types of inclines and declines, scenic vistas, luscious chaparral and a great workout.
The trails, ranging from 3 to 5 miles in length, are among the beautiful rolling foothills that comprise Cal-a-Vie's 200 plus acres. A 45-50 minute post-lunch hike is also offered on a seasonal basis.
NIA (Neuromuscular Integrative Action)
NIA is a low impact aerobic workout that combines the artful integration of dance, martial and healing arts creatively choreographed by the program’s originators, Carlos and Debbie Rosas, to an eclectic blend of music. NIA provides the guests with a wonderful mind and body experience. Catering to all levels of fitness, NIA has the unique ability to encourage everyone to feel empowered and uninhibited.
Spinning
This stationary bicycle journey is performed on Schwinn Elite Spinners with the “smart release breaking system” which is particularly beneficial to the beginning spinner. This workout is very rigorous but can be tailored to all levels of fitness. Variations of music, hand and body positions, speed and resistance provide endless possibilities in simulating a real biking adventure. (Note: SPD pedals are available on some of the bikes.)
Interval Strength and Conditioning
Finally, a class that hides how hard you are working with a variety of fun activities and a playful approach. Different levels of intensity are continuously offered and demonstrated to allow guests of all ages and abilities to participate. This workout includes mock movements from basketball, volleyball, fencing and skiing. Weights, medicine balls and even hula-hoops round out this “be a kid again,” total conditioning class.
Walks
There are two different walks offered daily. The early morning walk takes place at the neighboring golf course at the same time as the hikes. This brisk walk ranges from 2.25 miles to 4.5 miles and is both challenging and scenic. The afternoon walk is a great post lunch walk in the neighborhood adjacent to the golf club.
Water Volleyball
This very popular activity reviews basic game skills and allows everyone to play two to three games. This is a very social and fun water activity that can provide muscle recovery from the other fitness activities of the day
Waterworks
A non-impact class performed in the water. Using a variety of movements and equipment these classes may place the emphasis on cardiovascular conditioning, muscle toning and endurance or both. The Cal-a-Vie pool is kept between 88 and 91 degrees for a comfortable experience year round. Those that participate in water classes find them both therapeutic and fun!
